		<description>
	Dressing The Forest

“Where does the tree end and the rest of the world begin? (...) Is the bark, for example, part
of the tree? If I break off a piece in my hand and observe it closely, I will doubtless find that it
is inhabited by a great many creatures that have burrowed beneath it and made their homes
there. Are they part of the tree?
(...)
Considering, too, that the character of this particular tree lies just as much in the way it
responds to the currents of wind, in the swaying of its branches and the rustling of its leaves,
we might wonder whether the tree can be anything other than a tree-in-the-air. Is the wind,
then, not as intrinsic to the tree as its wood?”

					(Ingold,
Being alive to a world without objects, 2013)

Dressing the Forest is part of an ongoing research that aims to explore the potential for a different relationship between humans, other-than-humans, and the environment, which differs from the most common Western approach of reducing natural elements to their utilitarian value. &#38;nbsp;

By combining performative and textile practices, this research explores the potential of artistic gestures to foster empathic connections with all living beings and prompt a reevaluation of our relationships with the world.

By felting, spinning and weaving techniques, I transformed wool fibers into surfaces, creating a garment for the forest. This project emerged from a feeling of sorrow and guilt as well as from an urgent need to propose a new dynamic of giving and receiving in our relationships with other beings emphasizing the interconnectedness that binds us all.

My artistic gesture was here addressed to a centuries-old hackberry tree that had been pruned in a region of northeastern Italy, serving as an example of the human attitude to exploit the land. The performance served not only as a tribute to the tree and a gesture of mourning for its loss but also as an act of acknowledgment and celebration of the intricate web of relationships that were severed by its felling.Through an exploration of various aspects of our sensory perception, the act of dressing and its meaning, as well as the transformation of various materials, I aim to create a space for reflection, to foster a profound sense of respons-ability towards the world and to expand human responsiveness to the crises we face today.

This project was initiated last winter as part of theMA Arts &#38;amp; Ecology program at Dartington College of Arts, and I am currently developing new chapters for it. &#38;nbsp;

	Cook It Until It Softens

Cook It Until It Softens consists in the handmade creation of a
dress, using fabric crafted from images. Taken from a daily video
diary, the images are printed on cotton scraps and sewn together
following the measurements of my body.

Emerged in response to personal and collective narratives, this pro-
ject is a work in progress, driven by the urgency to rethink the space
in which we relate to others and to the world we inhabit. To do so, it
moves from the optical experience of images to a haptic experience
which, by its very definition, is a relational experience that places us
in direct contact with the other.&#60;img width="1839" height="2298" width_o="1839" height_o="2298" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c918f5026c8dd55102432f0b7e7bcceacc28fe23026235e3b5c0cce1191f631d/09_MargheritaMuriti_CookItUntilItSoftens2023.jpg" data-mid="210087006" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c918f5026c8dd55102432f0b7e7bcceacc28fe23026235e3b5c0cce1191f631d/09_MargheritaMuriti_CookItUntilItSoftens2023.jpg" /&#62;&#60;img width="1642" height="2188" width_o="1642" height_o="2188" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f17a0a7526673d1c210078295c3ce108074bd3f4a13117aacce041151c43de37/11_MargheritaMuriti_CookItUntilItSoftens2023.jpg" data-mid="210087008" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f17a0a7526673d1c210078295c3ce108074bd3f4a13117aacce041151c43de37/11_MargheritaMuriti_CookItUntilItSoftens2023.jpg" /&#62;

In a manner reminiscent of child’s play, the images are assembled
and give shape to new surfaces. Like a second skin or a very light
suit of armour, the dress witnesses an intimate link with these
images. Through the act of sewing, I aim to confer them a presence
and discover new modes of existence. The dress both conceals and
unveils parts of the body, much like the body itself, it becomes a
canvas for emotions and memories that represents an evolving way
of being in the world, continually made, unmade and remade.

		<description>Sailing With Hazel

Sailing With Hazel is a collaborative project started by Flick Ferdinando and Margherita Muriti. After experiencing a certain feeling of
discomfort, with a need to take action, they started building a boat
using hazel branches from their surroundings and sewing together
their leaves to make a sail.

Hazel branches are cyclically pruned allowing the stand to continue
growing for up to 800 years. The wood bends easily and continues
to bend beyond the cut, making it an excellent material for building
structures and dwellings.

They have been exploring further the interrelated aspects of it with
the relationships we forge with the world as well as with the crises
we face today. By putting together their practices, they built a ma-
king process that enabled them to face these shared feelings and
reawaken a sense of trust and hope.
&#60;img width="4016" height="6016" width_o="4016" height_o="6016" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e923d93a110da563ff1ed6a94720e934253e3cd4eb44a072990c25b1cbad7cf1/_DSC3903-copie.jpg" data-mid="210085958" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e923d93a110da563ff1ed6a94720e934253e3cd4eb44a072990c25b1cbad7cf1/_DSC3903-copie.jpg" /&#62;

This project was not conceived as a boat to sail towards a far
away destination, but rather a vessel that helps us move through the
complexity of the world we live with. It is thought of as an ancient jar
used to store and transport food while carrying scenes of different
natures on its surface. Similarly, Sailing with Hazel carries stories of
people, materials and their relationships.

The blood liquefied at 10 am - It will be a good year!

Every year, on September the 19th, thousands
of people assemble and wait for the miracle:
the liquefaction of Saint Januarius’ blood,
which, according to the legend, was saved bya woman just after his death. The archbishop
tilts the ampoule with the solid blood through a
very precise ritual of hand gestures. If the blood
turns into liquid, it will be a good year.

Touching is always a mutual action: what is
touched, touches back. This work is about the
empty space where two surfaces seem to
mingle, the proximity between my hands and
images. In Ancient Greece it was believed that
the act of seeing happened through a very thin
film through which the scene reached the eye.
It was this pelicula, a wafer-thin skin, that made
things visible.

What’s the relationship between the act of
seeing and touching? Do we touch when we
cannot see? Do we touch in order to see better,
to see further? Do we touch to stop seeing?

Candles were the firs lights, they were used to heat as well as to kee hopes and desires alive. Used in different kinds of rituals, they have always bond our visible, concrete and material world with invisible ones. A ritual is a repetitive sequence of gestures which is the external manifestation of an internal belief. The blood liquefied at 10 am - it will be a good
year! is a photography and installation work
which consists of wax tablets laid out on a surface with floating heating lightbulbs suspended
a few centimetres above them.
Every day, slowly heated, the opaque surfaces
become transparent, allowing the images to
appear.

					&#60;img width="943" height="1412" width_o="943" height_o="1412" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bfe8f6fc48aae80d385dd94563202c98f93e25b8a53b3afb84a220572331c3e8/MargheritaMuriti_The-Blood-Liquified-At-10am-It-Will-Be-A-Good-Year_31_Installation.jpg" data-mid="126300576" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/943/i/bfe8f6fc48aae80d385dd94563202c98f93e25b8a53b3afb84a220572331c3e8/MargheritaMuriti_The-Blood-Liquified-At-10am-It-Will-Be-A-Good-Year_31_Installation.jpg" /&#62;
Fondling images, hiding and revealing them,
sometimes scratching, creasing or crushing
them, they are brittle images, even so never
fully grasped. As in Byzantine culture, the defacement and disappearance of the images was
not an act of defilement but a sign of devotion,
a recirculation of the painted body in the body
of the beholder. The work has evolved through
a study of gestures, the photographic gesture
itself and the imprint process. Imprint is a very
similar process to photography.

Unlike the latter which creates a specular
resemblance, the imprint needs contact and
proximity. The image becomes a matter of
surfaces, its materiality a protection, gradually
hiding and revealing it.

Wax is a prodigious and almost living material.
Very similar to organic forms, it is malleable, it assumes the temperature and the form ofmy body. Once heated, this ductile material is
neither solid nor liquid. Images become viscous and sticky. Unstable and fragile, just a
little heat would transform them, create an oscillation between form and formlessness. One
part flows, changing its shape and the other
one evaporates, mixing with oxygen. The evolution, change and disappearance over a certain
period of time proves its instability and relates
these images to living organisms.

		<description>Looking for Brenda
	A walk on bird lines

Walking is a state in which the mind, body and world align, like three characters conversing with each other. The space we pass through usually has a begining and an end, but walking can also be an end in itself, a meditative act,
a search, a rhythmic movement that generates a rhythm of thought.

Using the Icarus application created by researchers at the Max Planck Institute to track the migratory movements of animals, we started looking at the
lines drawn by the migration of birds over periods of months and years. Animal migration is something that exists outside of the framework through
which we experience the world. Their movements ignore our conceptual and
physical limits (even if they are sometimes constrained by our artificial environment). They are guided by the search for conditions that met their basic
needs, but they are still shrouded in mystery: we still do not fully understand what determines their choice of direction, or how they navigate.

&#60;img width="2880" height="1800" width_o="2880" height_o="1800" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8a83ff487c91e8ade3ba1a9ec69e6598939780417e069908afa1b411f5bd953a/1.jpg" data-mid="128961954" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8a83ff487c91e8ade3ba1a9ec69e6598939780417e069908afa1b411f5bd953a/1.jpg" /&#62;

Among the animals that are part of the Icarus study, we chose to focus on white storks and purple herons, walking the lines drawn by their movements in order to make a new map. A symbol of (re)birth and fertility, the stork is a messenger, bearer of hope and auspiciousness; the heron
a symbol of balance, wisdom and regeneration. Walking becomes a&#38;nbsp; state of infinite possibilities, a performative search that follows a new
direction, in harmony with what surrounds us. Rita, the chosen bird, becomes an image of a new balance that is built through a collective walk and a series of gestures that give life to a common rhythm.

Walking is perhaps the voluntary action closest to the body's natural
rhythms, such as the rhythm of the breath and the heart. The walker is
never in front of the landscape, it is not a question of contemplation. As Frédéric Gros writes, walking is like a caress of the landscape. Between touch&#38;nbsp; and grasp, the caress stretches endlessly until the arm reaches and
traces a new path.

There is something ritualistic in the rhythm of the&#38;nbsp; breath and the steps, it is an explorative movement that seeks to further deepen our contact with the surface of the Earth and our relationship with what surrounds us.
This performative research follows a labyrinth of invisible ways and outlines a new path. Throughout the walk we collect photographs, videos
and sound recordings of the landscape as well as our bodily rhythms
(heartbeats, breath frequency, footsteps). We then rework the collected&#38;nbsp; material to shape a new cartography, a visual and auditory installation,
governed by the balance between living beings and their environment. The search for this balance as well as its perpetual movement is the object of our research.&#38;nbsp;

	Le Blanc Nuit

Le Blanc Nuit was born from the idea of recording
Venice which, in its fragility, seems to slowly
disappear. Margherita Muriti weaves this thin interlacing of images and words in order to evoke
her connection to the city; and within it, transcribes memories, sensations found in an image
which, in its different forms, proves impalpable.

Without a sound, Margherita’s delicate and versatile images plunge us in a nebulous atmosphere tinged with melancholy.
Like in the process of a haiku, the artist does
not only sketch an autobiographical image with
a retrospective nature, but engages imagination
and dream alike.

If reflecting on the nature of the photographic
medium is at the heart of her research, aiming
to record and remember, the artist explores
other mediums as well; other materials which,
in their fragility, also seem to be destined to
disappear. Images faint and become a mist that
could be an aroma, a vibration that could be
sound.

In the first series of Images oubliées composed by Claude Debussy, an actual story
without words takes shape. The composer
proposes a musical speech that gives way to
visuals (the light reflecting on water in its Reflets dans l’eau) or to sensations (introspection and melancholy in the subtle Hommage à
Rameau). Painting with music notes, Debussy
attempts to render his impressions: music and
painting constantly correspond with each other.
Nineteenth-century painters, such as Monet or
Sisley, also tried to replicate these impressions.
But when Debussy and many others called
upon sensation as impression, Margherita shapes the literal sense of the word through the process of imprinting a medium; in this case film
or photography.

In each artwork, the impression is contradicted, fades with time, disappears when one’s
hand stops touching it or when taken close to a
source of light.

Margherita uses the limited format of 16 mm
motion picture film in order to create images
that come alive, and that steal away. Her film, as
well as her engraved texts, creates resonance
for the shapes, the linearity of a building, of the
inside of a church, of trees shading a square,
of faces sketched on facades, and of the very
real hands of a woman. They are small images
that whisper sensations, in one’s ear as well as
hand.

One of Giorgione’s frescoes now preserved in
the Palazzo Grimani and entitled Nuda, echoes
the portraits made on fishing nets by Margherita of fading images, becoming blurred, like
diluted.

It is a form of contradiction with its medium,
the material of the image, here a net, there a
crackled fresco the lines of which become
clear-cut, sharp, like desiccated earth, like a
mosaic. The fresco, derived from the Italian
word for fresh, suddenly flakes, chips away,
fades. This face comes from another time and
belongs to the outdated art of mythical portraits, as a fresco, a bust, or a tondo.

White, just like light, can also be harmful and maybe that is what really creates unity in
images, rather than their contrast: an expression marrying a diffuse, vaporous, bright white,
with the darkness of a night; and the dense,
&#38;nbsp;

thick, dark black shrouding and embracing the
white of a fog, of a moon that is forgetful of the
night. In a play on lights, shadows, and transparencies, Margherita’s images become elusive, frac-
tured, ephemeral, fleeting. And yet, the entirety
of her work calls for recollection.

Reminiscent of the incessant to and fro of
idaes, of the lapping or movements of water
circulating through the canals of Venice, Le
Blanc Nuit becomes an itinerary, a journey.

	God How Shall I Pray?

A prayer is perhaps one of the most intimate means of communication.
It can be whispered quietly or it can even be silent, the words only
pronounced inside your mind. With God, how shall I pray?, this spiritual intimacy is translated into a
visual poem. As a stream of conscioussness, one photography follows
another, sometimes abruptly interrupted by a few lines of text.
